Through my service, I have contributed to the structures, supports, policies, and plans that enable meaningful learning experiences for our students in the Faculty of Education and the University of Manitoba. I have also connected to the wider educational community in Manitoba (and beyond), so I can develop relationships, support, empower, renew, and uplift the work of educators and educational leaders in the K-12 school system. I have a few highlights of my ongoing service efforts.

Co-Director
The Manitoba Writing Project supports educators through a professional network dedicated to becoming writers and teachers of writers. We were the first affiliated international site in Canada of the National Writing Project
I am the Co-Director of the MBWP along with Founding Director, Dr. Michelle Honeyford. Together we teach a Summer Writing Institute course every other year called “Becoming Writers: Place, Power, and Pedagogy in Teaching Writing” and we facilitate a variety of renewal and outreach events.
Language and Literacies Researchers of Canada (LLRC) / L’Association canadienne des chercheurs en langue et littératie (ACCLL)
2nd Co-Vice President / Conference Chair
Language and Literacy Researchers of Canada (LLRC) is a special interest group (SIG) within the Canadian Association for Curriculum Studies (CACS), which is a constituent association of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE). LLRC is comprised of individuals who are interested in language and literacy education and research, particularly, but not exclusively, within the Canadian context. LLRC/ACCLL understands literacies broadly and situationally as the ways in which people make contextualized meaning and use language (written and multimodal) for a range of purposes and in a variety of forms. I am currently serving my second year as 2nd Co-Vice President and Conference Chair with my colleague Dr. Heather Phipps from the University of Manitoba. We will facilitate the calls for papers, reviews, acceptances, program development, and general organization of the LLRC SIG at the 2027 CSSE conference. Working alongside my colleague Dr. Amir Michalovich, I was 2nd VP and Co-Program Chair for the LLRC program at CSSE 2026 at University of Winnipeg.
Well-Being and Well-Becoming in Schools
Podcast Host & Producer
Well-being and Well-becoming in Schools is a professional network dedicated to research and practice in support of the idea of making human flourishing (well-being and well-becoming) a primary purpose of public school education, with special consideration given to the Canadian context. As part of the network, I created and hosted a podcast during the early part of the Covid-19 pandemic, called the Schools of Well-Being. The podcast invites you to listen to conversations with fellow researchers and academics who explain the schools of thought that influence what they think well-being and well-becoming means and how it connects to schools, students, teachers, educational leaders, and communities.
