Dr. Jennifer Watt

I have lived, taught, learned, researched, played, walked, and raised my family for over twenty years in what is now known as Winnipeg, which is located on Treaty 1 and the Red River Métis Self-Government Recognition and Implementation Treaty territory. I acknowledge that I am a settler living on and benefitting from original lands of the Anishnaabeg, Inniwak, Anisninewuk, Dakota Oyate, Dene and Inuit, and on the National Homeland of the Red River Métis.

As part of the University of Manitoba community, I recognize that Winnipeg and the Fort Garry campus is nourished by water from the Shoal Lake 30 First Nation in Treaty 3 Territory and receives most of its hydroelectricity from Treaty 5 territory, including the Nelson and Winnipeg rivers. The communities living within these Territories have been and continue to be impacted by colonization. As we benefit from these resources, we commit to working towards a more just and equitable future with Indigenous peoples.  In my work as an educator and in my daily relations, I recognize that colonial ways of being, doing, teaching, and learning have caused and continue to cause harm for generations and I commit to addressing the injustices and barriers that persist today and contributing to more hope-filled, livable, and loving futurities for all.
